New Hampshire crash claims Irwin's life

LOUDON, N.H. (July 7, 2000)
Team SABCO withdrew its entry for the thatlook.com 300 for the No. 42 Chevrolet.
Kenny Irwin, a Rookie of the Year in two different NASCAR divisions, was fatally injured Friday in the opening moments of the initial NASCAR Winston Cup Series practice for Sunday's thatlook.com 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway.
The accident in turn three of the 1.05-mile flat speedway was similar to the May 12 crash in a NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division practice session that fatally injured 19-year-old Adam Petty.
"We are deeply saddened at today's passing of Kenny Irwin," NASCAR president Bill France said. "On behalf of all of us at NASCAR and the entire NASCAR community, our deepest sympathies, all our thoughts and prayers are with Kenny's family, friends and everyone at Team SABCO. Kenny was a fine competitor and will be missed very much by the entire NASCAR community."
Irwin, 30, of Indianapolis, crashed his No. 42 BellSouth Chevrolet at about 11:23 a.m. ET, less than 10 minutes into the opening practice session for Sunday's 18th event of the 34-race season.
Irwin struck the wall near the third turn and his Team SABCO-owned Monte Carlo came to rest upside down between turns three and four near the outside wall. Emergency crews extricated Irwin from the car and moved him by ambulance to the infield care center. Irwin was tended to at the facility for more than 30 minutes before he was transported to Concord Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead due to "multiple injuries."
Race Update:
Grissom to sub for Petty at New Hampshire
LEVEL CROSS, N.C. (July 3, 2000)
Kyle Petty will not travel to New Hampshire for this weekend's Jiffy Lube 300. Kyle Petty has decided to skip this week's NASCAR Winston Cup Series New Hampshire 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway, Petty Enterprises announced Monday.
The team said Petty will be replaced in the No. 44 Hot Wheels Racing Pontiac by Steve Grissom, Petty Enterprises' driver in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Grissom will already be at the track in Loudon, N.H., for Saturday's New Hampshire 200, so having him also handle the driving duties for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series time trials Friday and the race Sunday was a natural decision. The team said Petty will not travel to Loudon this weekend while he continues to work through the grieving process following the death of his 19-year-old son, Adam. The younger Petty was fatally injured in a crash in April while preparing for a NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race at the New Hampshire track.
To celebrate the new sponsorship agreement, DuPont unveiled the No. 24 "Signature Car," with the signatures of Gordon, Savelli and Rick Hendrick, founder of Hendrick Motorsports, along with "May 24, 2000" all added to the hood. Gordon will race the signature car in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C.
Gordon won the NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship in the No. 24 DuPont Automotive Finishes Chevrolet in 1995, '97 and '98. He has won 50 races in the famous rainbow-colored Monte Carlo.
"What was really amazing is that (DuPont) stuck with me beyond '93, because I messed up a lot of paint jobs that year."
-Jeff Gordon
